Vision & Data Moat

No single feature is worth $100,000/year. Organizations pay when Coral Lookout becomes mission-critical — because of accumulated data, workflows, integrations, and trust.

Data moat & workflow moat

Build the network. Own the history. Become infrastructure.

A competitor can copy our code. They cannot instantly copy years of curated reef observations, school workflows, research integrations, and verified trust. We obsess over network effects — not one killer feature.

Honest AI methodology

What this AI does — and does not claim. Our scanner estimates a relative reef health label from color and texture cues and always returns a confidence score — it does not diagnose species-level disease or replace a trained marine biologist. We would rather under-claim than oversell an AI score to a classroom or a partner.

What it does

  • · Checks whether an image looks like a reef / coral scene before scoring
  • · Estimates a relative health label from color and texture cues
  • · Returns a confidence score so you can judge how certain the model is

What it doesn't claim

  • · Diagnose species-level disease with scientific certainty
  • · Replace trained marine biologists or lab assays
  • · Guarantee GPS accuracy if you skip location pinning

Ten pillars of the moat

We are not chasing one killer feature. We are building the layers that make Coral Lookout hard to replace — and mission-critical for schools, science, NGOs, and governments.

Pillar 1

Global Coral Intelligence Network

Building

The place universities, aquariums, schools, divers, and NGOs contribute reef observations — becoming the world’s shared coral intelligence layer.

  • ·Universities upload reef surveys
  • ·Aquariums contribute observations
  • ·Schools submit class projects
  • ·Divers upload geotagged reef photos
  • ·NGOs monitor restoration projects
  • ·Long-term: time-series change, species distributions, bleaching trends, restoration metrics

Pillar 2

Automated Reef Monitoring

Planned

Move beyond one-off uploads. Connect drones, underwater robots, GoPros, and fixed cameras so monitoring becomes daily infrastructure.

  • ·Connect drones, ROVs, GoPros, and underwater cameras
  • ·Daily alerts: health decline, new bleaching, crown-of-thorns detections
  • ·Turn Coral Lookout from software into reef infrastructure

Pillar 3

Scientific-grade AI

Building

Go beyond a single health score. Deliver species and disease signals, bleaching probability, confidence intervals, uncertainty maps, explainability, citations, and downloadable reports researchers can trust.

  • ·Species & disease identification
  • ·Bleaching probability with confidence intervals
  • ·Uncertainty maps and explainability
  • ·Citations and downloadable scientific reports
Run the AI pipeline

Pillar 4

Benchmark Database

Building

Type a reef region and instantly compare growth, bleaching trends, historical change, and restoration outcomes against nearby reefs — a corpus nobody builds overnight.

  • ·Regional reef benchmarks
  • ·Growth vs nearby reefs
  • ·Bleaching trends and historical change
  • ·Restoration comparisons

Pillar 5

Research Collaboration Platform

Building

Where marine science happens: shared datasets, annotations, publications, project workspaces, AI-assisted labeling, and reviewer mode.

  • ·Research CSV / GeoJSON exports
  • ·Educator-verified review badges (stub)
  • ·Annotations and publication workspaces (next)
  • ·AI-assisted labeling (planned)
See research tools

Pillar 6

Government Reporting

Planned

One-click standardized outputs: NOAA-style reports, restoration reports, grant reports, and biodiversity summaries governments already require.

  • ·NOAA-style reef status reports
  • ·Restoration and grant reporting packs
  • ·Biodiversity summaries for agencies
Partner for reports

Pillar 7

Predictive AI

Planned

Don’t only analyze today. Forecast bleaching risk, disease spread, storm impact, and restoration success — insights that save organizations money.

  • ·Bleaching risk next month
  • ·Disease spread forecasts
  • ·Storm impact estimates
  • ·Restoration success prediction
View bleaching insights

Pillar 8

Digital Twin

Planned

A living 3D model of each reef where every coral colony is tracked across years — compare 2026 → 2027 → 2028 → 2032.

  • ·Living 3D reef models
  • ·Year-over-year visual comparison
  • ·Colony-level tracking over time

Pillar 9

API Platform

Building

Sell infrastructure, not only software. When every conservation app calls Coral Lookout’s API, usage becomes embedded and renewals become inevitable.

  • ·Private partner read API preview (keyed)
  • ·Upload and health-trend endpoints (roadmap)
  • ·Public marketplace deferred until contracts require it
Research & NGO tier

Pillar 10

Verified Global Dataset

Building

Every observation carries GPS, timestamp, contributor, validation score, and expert review — a citable dataset for scientific papers.

  • ·GPS + timestamp on every observation
  • ·Contributor identity and provenance
  • ·Validation scores and expert review
  • ·Citable outputs for publications

Four phases of network effects

Features get us started. Network effects make Coral Lookout the standard — and the place historical reef data lives.

  1. 1Live now

    AI scanner

Ship a usable scan → share → map → learn loop so students and teachers contribute real observations today.

  2. 2Building

    Best reef monitoring platform

Unite gallery, map, academy, school chapters, and research tools into one workflow organizations depend on.

  3. 3Building

Largest reef dataset in the world

Accumulate verified, geotagged, time-stamped observations at global scale — the data moat competitors cannot clone overnight.

  4. 4Planned

Standard platform for science & policy

Researchers, schools, NGOs, and governments run on Coral Lookout because everyone else already does — historical data and workflows live here.

Explicitly later

We would rather say “not yet” than overpromise. These pillars are real parts of the roadmap but are deliberately deprioritized (P3) behind the live and building work above — including 3D digital twins, drone/robot ingest, full predictive AI, and a public API marketplace.

  • Automated Reef Monitoring
  • Government Reporting
  • Predictive AI
  • Digital Twin

The biggest moat

If we are building a lasting company, we obsess over network effects — not features. At Phase 4, people are not paying because the scanner is amazing. They are paying because everyone else is already using Coral Lookout, the historical data lives here, and their workflows depend on it.
